Film vs Digital: When to choose film over digital and why it matters

Lately, film has been making a big comeback. People are rediscovering analog, seeking tangible, nostalgic ways to connect in a digital world. For me, film offers an incredible hands-on experience that encourages a slower, more intentional way of shooting. I believe there’s a time and place for both film and digital in photography, and in this post, I’ll outline my main points on each. My goal is to show why I love incorporating film into my work and to inspire clients and creatives to explore it as a medium in their own shoots.

The Look and Feel

Film

  • Grain and texture creates a timeless, organic aesthetic.

  • Skin tones and colors often feel richer and more natural

  • Slight unpredictability which can add character

Digital

  • Sharp and clean images

  • Easier to replicate the same look

  • Instant review for precise control

The Process

Film

  • Slower process in general (each frame counts)

  • Encourages planning and mindfulness

  • I develop and scan my film at home which is a process i hold dear to my heart

Digital

  • Instant feedback

  • Post processing is less of a hassle

  • Easier for fast past environments

  • Flexible editing in post (more images) but honestly this can be overwhelming at times for me at least… too much choice

Creative projects & storytelling

Film is great when

  • You want a more thoughtful approach

  • You want to be in the moment

  • Great for a more moody or artistic feel

Digital is better when

  • You need quantity and speed

  • Low light or fast moving subjects

  • A cheaper option because film can be pricey

Emotional Value

Film

  • Hands on experience

  • Creates a sense of anticipation and satisfaction when you see the images

  • A connection to the images as a photographer (something about the process feels so special)

Digital

  • Immediate gratification

Why I tend to go for a hybrid approach

Using both film and digital in your photography workflow can actually give you the best of both worlds each medium complements the other in unique ways.

Film gives you a distinctive, timeless aesthetic while digital give you precision and flexibility. Using both lets me choose the right tool for the story/project I am working on.
